The Science Basement Afternoons Talk series is a monthly event where we invite speakers from various fields of science to share their knowledge and insights with the public. The talk is open to all and is free of charge. I've been the Afternoons team lead since 2024, and will present my talk 30mins + Q&A session. Welcome!

Summary of the talk: Viruses are nature's ultimate hackers. In this talk, Krista explores their mysterious origins, why scientists still debate whether they’re alive, and the tricks they use to hijack our cells and hide within them. This talk focuses on human herpesviruses, which cause a lifelong infection, and how their cell-manipulating strategies can sometimes lead to cancer.
